His is a familiar and welcome face, both in the orchestra’s first chair and when he stands alone as soloist. He has been concertmaster for a quarter of a century now, and has been featured soloist many times including in the Mendelssohn and Brahms concertos. One of the most interesting guest appearances occurred Saturday night when Lucas Richman took the helm of the orchestra for a concert featuring the powerful fifth symphony of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich along with Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture” and Chausson’s “Poème for Violin and Orchestra.” That has led to more than a few interesting concerts as a series of guest conductors have led the orchestra through its first four concerts this season and will continue to do so through next season. The Long Beach Symphony hasn’t had a regular leader since Enrique Arturo Diemecke ended his 14-year tenure as music director at the end of last season.
